Candida can appear anywhere in the body. An example of Candida infection is diaper rash in babies.

In this article we focus on Candida – infection of the genitals in men and women.

Candida – infection due to various causes

Candida is a fungal infection caused by yeast-like fungi. In a good balance with other bacteria, this yeast forms a healthy flora for the skin and mucous membranes. Under changing circumstances, such as a weakened immune system, diabetes, the use of antibiotics, hormonal changes or other factors, the yeast can multiply.

Symptoms of Candida infection in women

A vaginal candida infection, also called a vaginal yeast infection, is caused by overgrowth of the fungus Candida in the vagina. The symptoms may include:

  • Itching: Intense itching in and around the vaginal area is a common symptom.
  • Burning: A burning sensation, especially when urinating or during sexual intercourse.
  • Discharge: Thick, white, chunky discharge that resembles cottage cheese. This may have an unpleasant odor.
  • Redness and swelling: The vulva and vaginal opening may be red and swollen.
  • Pain: Sometimes there may be pain or discomfort in the vaginal area.

Symptoms of Candida infection in men

A candida infection in men, also called candidiasis, is caused by overgrowth of the fungus Candida on the skin or mucous membranes. The symptoms may include:

  • Itching and irritation: An intense itching and irritation in the genital area, including the penis and the skin around it.
  • Redness and swelling: The affected skin may become red and swollen, causing discomfort.
  • Rash: A red rash may develop that is often flaky or spotty.
  • Burning: A burning sensation, especially when urinating or during sexual activity.
  • Discharge: In some cases, a white, friable discharge may appear under the foreskin.
  • Pain: There may be pain or discomfort in the genital area.

The symptoms often disappear on their own within two weeks, but there are various treatment options available if you still want to start treatment. Please consult with your doctor for proper treatment.

If you prefer a natural remedy, the following options may help:

  • Saline solution : dissolve a teaspoon of salt in 250 ml of water, or 4 teaspoons of salt in 1 liter of water.
  • Vinegar : Mix water with vinegar in a ratio of 1/3 vinegar to 2/3 water.
  • Sodium bicarbonate: rinse daily with a glass of water with a teaspoon of soda until the symptoms disappear, or take a bath with soda water.
  • Chamomile : Use chamomile tea for rinsing or take a 15-minute bath with chamomile tea daily.
  • Tar soap : tar with its characteristic odor is a natural remedy against fungi and eczema. Remedies containing tar are effective against fungi, relieve itching and reduce redness. Various options are offered online for products containing tar, such as shampoo and soap.

The above remedies can be applied in various ways, such as rinsing, bathing or taking a bath.

Advice to prevent Candida infection complaints

  • Do not use soap, including specialty soap or rinse, as this disrupts natural acidity and can promote yeast growth. Use only water, and at least twice a day: morning and evening.
  • Do not wear underwear that is too tight and choose cotton underwear.
  • Limit sugar intake, because fungi are nourished by sugars. Choose a healthy and varied diet with lots of vegetables.
  • Take 500 mg to 1000 mg of vitamin C daily to support the immune system. Preferably take vitamin C after meals to prevent stomach irritation.
  • Ensure sufficient fluid intake.
  • Get a good night’s sleep.
